No need to lose hope if your old stock certificate does not trade in the name of the company anymore. It can still be valuable in such a case. Say, the company might have merged with another company. The company could have easily simply changed its name. You can use the Internet to find out whether it holds a value or not. In the worse case if it does not have any value; still it could be valuable as a collectible.
