A dehumidifier is a type of appliance or device that reduces the ambient humidity in a given location. Contrast this with a humidifier, which does the opposite thing. There are many varieties of dehumidifiers and many of them work in different ways. However, the end result is always the same. That is, the ambient humidity in a certain area is reduced by a significant factor. There are many reasons why one would consider excessive humidity undesirable. For one thing, it allows various types of mold and mildew to grow, creating potential health risks.
