Designers who work in smaller design consulting firms, generally work regular hours in well-lit and comfortable settings. Designers need to have a good sense of visual appeal. Beginning designers usually receive on the job training and normally need one to three years of training before advancing to higher level positions. Fashion designers can advance to chief designer, department head, or other supervisory positions. Fashion designers also work with cosmetologists and people for fashion shows and events. A fashion design career is a labor of love, competition for the large department stores.
